Not Good

Today I got the message that one of my best friends, a friend who's not only Håkon's godfather but also the man who's wedding I'm supposed to be the toastmaster at this summer, has been hospitalised because of a brain haemorrhage. He's currently in a coma induced by the doctors to keep his brain activity as low as possible. The current plan is to wake him up on Monday, but it's to early to say what state he'll be in then. The reports from the doctors are conflicting, but what is known is that he also has pneumonia at this stage, something that is not good if you're connected to a respirator.

Even if I am a cynical and pessimistic bastard, I always keep my chin up when these sorts of things happen. I expect the worst yes, but I always have good hopes. My thoughts go to his family and his fiancée.

It's only four days since I spoke to him on the phone about his wedding and Håkon's birthday, the latter an occasion he always remember to buy great gifts for. Good luck, my friend! I'm sure in no time we will be annoying the world with bad jokes again.

Is it rude to ask how it's going with your friend?

Something similar happened last year, to the mother of a kindergarden-friend of my eldest son. She just fell over at work, and it was brain haemorrhage. She lay in a coma for about a week, and they thought she was gonna be okay, but alas she died. I think she was in her late thirties.

I hope your friend is making a speedy recovery.
